Partner's Advice Leads to $150,000 Powerball Power Play Prize

Sep 17, 2025

A Powerball ticket purchased at Star Liquor & Tobacco, 1911 W. Jesse James Road in Excelsior Springs, led to a $150,000 win for a couple playing the Missouri Lottery in Clay County. The win resulted from their decision to add the Power Play option to their ticket for the Sept. 1 drawing.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever added Power Play and that was due to my partner telling me while I was purchasing the ticket, ‘Get the Power Play!’” one of the winners shared. “I did not know what the Power Play feature was, to be honest.

“I’m thankful she gave me that advice,” he added

The winning numbers on Sept. 1 were 8, 23, 25, 40 and 53, with a Powerball number of 5. The ticket matched four of five white-ball numbers drawn, as well as the Powerball number, to win a base prize of $50,000. Since the players also added the Power Play option, the prize was instantly tripled by the 3X multiplier number drawn – producing a total prize of $150,000.

Powerball is a multi-state Draw Game with drawings held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Monday’s estimated jackpot is $81 million.

In FY24, players in Clay County won more than $29.6 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, retailers received more than $3.1 million in commissions and bonuses, and more than $10.1 million in Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county.
